IIT Madras BS Grading System Explained
The IIT Madras BS program follows a standardized grading system. Understanding how grades work is essential for planning your CGPA and academic progression.
Grade Letters and Grade Points
| Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| S | 10 |
| A | 9 |
| B | 8 |
| C | 7 |
| D | 6 |
| E | 4 |
| U | 0 |
How Grades Affect Your CGPA
CGPA is calculated as a weighted average of grade points based on course credits. This means:
- Higher-credit courses affect CGPA more
- An S or A in a 4-credit course has strong impact
- Projects and labs also carry credits
Important Notes
- A U grade does not contribute to CGPA
- Only passed courses are included in CGPA calculation
- Retaken courses replace earlier attempts as per IITM rules
